Retirement benefit obligation and similar obligations
Overall, the net obligation under defined benefit pension plans fell to €481.7 million (December 31, 2025: €527.5 million). The net obligation consisted of €562.1 million recognized under the retirement benefit obligation and similar obligations (December 31, 2025: €604.3 million) less a sum of €80.5 million (December 31, 2025: €76.9 million) recognized under other non-current assets. The decrease compared with the end of 2025 was largely due to special funding of €16.8 million provided in order to increase the funding ratio of the pension plans in Germany, but was also attributable to slightly higher discount rates. Changes to discount rates resulted in an overall increase in equity of €21.5 million (after deferred taxes) in the reporting period.
Liabilities from lease business
Non-current and current liabilities from the lease business totaled €4,540.1 million (December 31, 2025: €4,828.6 million) and could be broken down into a sum of €4,428.1 million (December 31, 2025: €4,714.6 million) that related to the financing of the direct lease business and a sum of €112.0 million (December 31, 2025: €114.0 million) that related to repurchase obligations resulting from the indirect lease business.
The reduction in liabilities from the lease business was attributable to the funds of €500.0 million from the corporate bond issued in March 2026, which were used to repay dedicated bank loans. This was countered to an extent by an increase in the financing volume resulting from the growth of the lease business. Further information on the corporate bond can be found under ‘Information on financial instruments’.
